TERM: 4 YEARS - SALARY: $79,092 - The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the County, providing police services for areas not served by other police agencies. The Sheriff's Office assists local governments in police work when requested and has concurrent jurisdiction with the state in highway patrol and regular police work within the County. It works in cooperation with local, state and federal governments. Other responsibilities of the Office include extensive criminal investigations, responding to high-risk and crisis situations, executing legal processes issued by non-criminal courts in New York State, supervision and management of the Erie County Holding Center and the Correctional Facility, and the care and custody of persons pending court action. The Sheriff serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Courts.

A. Bricks and mortar are not the problem - management, supervision, training, equipment, accountability and leadership are the real issues. Follow the guidelines in the DOJ and NYSCOC lawsuits, use them as a part of a strategic plan. Capital improvements will help but it won't address the largest part of the problem. |

A. A new building would provide additional detention cells, a more efficient central booking and transportation center, as well as better mental and medical housing units. A "lockup" facility would not be required to provide amenities such as recreation, visitation, facility rulebooks and grievance forms for pre-arraigned prisoners. |
